Mexico Soundtrack

Guanajuato: Guanajuato provided some wonderful and wonderfully terrible tunes. The most memorable is at a mediocre Italian place in a hotel at the main plaza. Both times we ate there the music was laughably entertaining. A sample from both our visits:

  • Stay with Me – Sam Smith
  • I’ve Never Been to Me – Charlene
  • The Living Years – Eric
  • Babe – Styx
  • Feelings – Morris Albert
  • a selection of Peter Gabriel
  • Spare Lives – Phil Collins
  • Eagles – New Kid In Town
  • How Deep is your love – Bee Gees
  • Careless Whisper – George Michael
  • John Secada – Just Another Day (Without You)
  • Queen – I want to Break Free
  • Sometimes When We Touch – Dan Hill
  • Never Knew Love Like This Before – Stephanie Mills
  • Muscrat Love – Captain & Tennille
  • Eye in the Sky – Alan Parsons Project
  • Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now – Starship (Wasn’t this also on the Mannequin Soundtrack?)
  • You’ve Got a Friend – Carole King

Other music I have Shazaamed simply because I enjoy it or think it would be an excellent song for a Spin class. Most of these came out of Mexico City, which clearly catered to a different demographic:

  • Cups – Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect Soundtrack)
  • Worth It – Fifth Harmony ft. Kid Ink
  • Heart’s on Fire – Passenger
  • Give Me Sunshine – Santa Maradona F.C. ft. Lucy Spraggan
  • In Your Arms (Friendly Ghost Remix) – Nico & Vinz
  • One Day – Arash
  • Come Alive – Adam K ft. Matthew Steeper
  • Firestone – Kygo ft. Conrad
  • Dancer – Kygo Remix
  • Dites Moi Tu – Karpatt*
  • Au Café De La Paix – Thomas Fersen*
  • She Moves – Alle Farben Ft. Graham Candy
  • The Sun  (Blackbox Radiovox) – Western Disco Ft. Lura*
  • Redondo – Every Single Piece
  • With You (Daniel Richard Remix) – Jupiter Project & Jetski Safari ft. Helen Corry
  • Hot Skin – Sam Feldt & Kav Verhouser
  • No enemiesz – Kiesza
  • Sunshine – Redondo & Boiler
  • One More Day (Stay with Me) – Example
  • The Way We Are – Alesha Dixon*
  • Always – DVBBS*
  • Headlights – Robin Schulz ft. Ilsey
  • Sail Away – Zenn & Mike Diamondz
  • Problem (DJ Buddha & Lucky G House Mix) – Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea
  • We Belong (Odesza Remix) – RAC ft Katie Herzig
  • A Sky Full of Stars – Coldplay
  • Aloe Blacc – The Man

Most of the music we hear in stores, restaurants, and used in street performances is American Music. I’ve had one conversation with a local – a guy named Manuel who has a Huichol Art store at a local Street market. He was very big into peyote and the sacred use of it in these traditional culture and had peyote growing in pots outside his shop. He also, unsurprisingly, loves American 60’s psychedelic music.

There were of course the Mariachi bands walking around (Guanajuato mostly) playing for tips. While much of that music had a familiarity to me, what was most recognizable was Cielito Lindo. Also in Guanajuato was the local symphony. Regrettably we could not attend evening theatre performances, but the orchestra played for free to the public every Sunday morning. The most memorable song – Final Countdown (!!!)

I gathered the songs I could together on a Spotify playlist so feel free to tune in. It’s likely going to be received as both terrible and wonderful music, depending on your individual tastes.  Click here to Spotify The Mexican Soundtrack.
